Is urgent care covered by insurance?
The majority of insurance plans cover urgent care, although some may not classify it as emergency medical care – which is required by the Affordable Care Act. If you are unsure if your plan covers a visit to an urgent care clinic, you should call your insurance provider to find out. Additionally, if you have any questions regarding whether an urgent care clinic accepts your insurance plan, you should call or check their website to see which insurance plans they accept.

What does urgent care treat?
Urgent care centers treat a variety of non-emergency medical conditions, while also providing routine services such as vaccinations, preventative care, and lab work. Some of the more common illnesses and conditions that urgent care centers treat include: asthma and allergic reactions; cuts, burns, bug and animal bites; falls, sprains and strains, and broken bones; colds and flus; pink eye and ear infections; sinus infections (sinusitis); and bronchitis and strep throat.
In addition to offering walk-in medical services for a variety of non-emergent medical situations, urgent care centers also provide a variety of diagnostic services – including STD and pregnancy tests – and preventative medicine, such as vaccinations and routine physicals. The diagnostic testing offered at urgent care centers is typically the same as what is offered at either a hospital emergency room or through your primary care physician, some of the more common tests that urgent care centers provide include: a variety of blood tests; electrolyte testing; STD and pregnancy tests; urinalysis; drug screenings and tests; and PN/INR tests.
For those who are in need of routine medical services, urgent care centers can help you on a walk-in basis when you either do not have a primary care physician or cannot get an appointment to see yours when you need to. Urgent care centers may provide any or all of the following services: vaccinations, including flu shots; physicals; gynecologic exams; and drug screenings.
When should you go to urgent care?
It is important to note that urgent care is not a replacement for emergent medical care. Urgent care facilities will treat any minor illness or injury that you might see your primary care physician for, or any other urgent medical situation that does not require emergent medical attention. Urgent care centers offer same-day medical services, prominently on a walk-in basis. If you have any of the following symptoms, you should consider going to an urgent care clinic:
- Fever without a rash or other allergic reaction;
- Vomiting or recurring diarrhea;
- Abdominal pain;
- Shortness of breath or wheezing;
- Minor to moderate cold or flu symptoms;
- Sprains and strains;
- Minor or small injuries such as cuts or burns.
Urgent care centers are an alternative when you require medical care or attention, but either do not have a primary care physician or cannot get in to see yours soon enough.
